The nine day festival of Navaratri celebrated twice a year is a season of rejoicing and celebration. They are the most important nights in the whole year for Hindus all over the world.
The name Nava-ratri in itself is self explanatory. “Nava”- means day and “ratri” means night- combined together they mean nine days and nights. This festival of Navaratri is observed twice a year, once in the beginning of summer and again at the onset of winter. This is celebrated in different styles throughout India. In Gujarat the festival is celebrated with Garba dance.
During the Navaratris, Hindus worship the Durga, the goddess of power and energy--Shakti. The Goddess Durga is more commonly referred as Devi and is the remover of miseries of life. Navaratri is the only festival in the world which is observed twice a year. The first Navratri is observed in the beginning of summer and the second at the beginning of winter.
Navaratris are divided into three different parts. They are dedicated to three goddesses namely Saraswati (Goddess of learning and speech), Lakshmi (Goddess of wealth and prosperity), and Durga (Goddess of strength and courage).
During the first three days of the Navaratri, Goddess Durga is invoked in order to destroy all the impurities, vices and defects. The next three days, are dedicated to the goddess of wealth “Lakshmi” - who is considered to have the power of bestowing inexhaustible wealth on her devotees. The final three days are spent in worshipping the goddess Saraswati who is the bestower of wisdom, We need the blessings of all three aspects of the divine mother in order have all-round success in life-- hence, the worship for nine nights.
The festivals of Navratri are not just limited to festivities and rejoicing. They are meant for self introspection. The followers of Hinduism keep fast in order to cleanse their souls and stay away from worldly charms. A lot of community services such as giving alms to the poor, feeding the poor by organizing langars – community kitchens are performed all over the country.
